While driving with her two sons, Jane Holman (Mastrantonio) accidentally hits a drifter named Jack McCloud (Swayze), injuring his leg. Feeling responsible, Jane offers Jack and his dog a place to stay until he recovers. As Jack tries to adjust to their way of life, he becomes cherished by the family. He begins teaching baseball to Tom, who longs for his father lost in the Korean War, and the two form a deep friendship. Meanwhile, Gunny suspects there is more to Jack and Betty Jane than it seems. It is revealed that Jack is actually Jack McCloud, a former Star White Socks baseball player from 1941 who vanished after his first season. The story beautifully blends a boy’s imagination with the mysterious presence of Jack’s dog, leaving us to wonder if we’re witnessing fantasy or magic. This tale explores themes of friendship, family, and the realization that life is often more complex than it appears.
