British underdog Gary, a failed businessman, has just landed in the chic Sanlitun area of Beijing, supposedly to launch a new venture. However, his relocation is also motivated by personal reasons, such as following his ex-wife and young son. Gary quickly discovers that achieving success in China is no simple task. Lacking self-awareness and only occasionally grounded in reality, he ventures forth with confidence in himself but with minimal understanding of Chinese culture. He soon teams up with Frank, an Australian trust-fund heir who offers to guide him in Eastern customs. However, Frank’s teaching style mainly involves criticizing Gary for being a Westerner and not adopting a “Chinese” approach like him.
