In the summer of 1963, the Watson family, who are very close, reside in Flint, Michigan. When 15-year-old Byron’s behavior becomes too much to handle, his parents decide it’s time for a change and opt for a visit to Grandma Sands in Birmingham, Alabama, known for her strict discipline. The Watsons pack into their 1948 Plymouth Brown Bomber and journey south. Upon arriving in Birmingham, they are introduced to Grandma Sands and her companion, Mr. Robert, and quickly realize that life there is quite different from Flint. During this pivotal summer, the Watsons become involved in events far more significant than Byron’s mischief, events that will transform both their lives and the nation.
