Although Levi was freed from Auschwitz on January 27, 1945, he didn’t arrive in Turin until October 19 of the same year. After a period in a Soviet camp designated for former concentration camp survivors, he began a challenging trip back home. He traveled alongside Italian ex-prisoners of war from the Italian Army in Russia. His extensive train journey back to Turin followed a winding path through Poland, Russia, Romania, Hungary, Austria, and Germany.
