Explorer Alan Monroe is doubtful when a friend informs him about the clandestine group known as the Paladins of the Red Order, dedicated to pursuing a supernatural terror called the Shiftling. His skepticism vanishes when the Paladins are annihilated, and the Shiftling turns its attention to the only remaining person aware of its presence: Monroe himself.
