Diz (Joel Courtney) is a daring teenage wanderer who lives a life constantly on the move. Having been left by his parents during his childhood, he fends for himself and refuses any charity. He takes what he desires and then disappears. Cynical and resolute in his independence, Diz’s existence is defined by theft and neglect. His life takes a turn when he drifts into a small town along the Snake River. There, he encounters an unshakeable elderly man named Marty and becomes infatuated with Marty’s cautious granddaughter, Selah. After Diz steals from a local drug-crazed individual, he finds himself in possession of a large sum of money and pursued by two ruthless killers. With more cash than he can handle and dangerous criminals on his trail, Diz endangers those he has grown to care for, all while trying to win over Selah. However, some things cannot be taken or purchased. “The River Thief” is a film that explores themes of remorse, selflessness, and embracing life as a precious gift.
