Anita, Rita, Ricardo, and Andrés have been part of a school for individuals with Down syndrome for four decades. As they reach their mid-40s, they are growing weary of the comfort and routine this environment provides. Some of them find their roles in the school’s bakery lacking in challenge. They also crave more personal freedom. Anita and Andrés, who are in love, still reside with their families but dream of having a private space to share and aspire to marry and start a family. Unfortunately, the society they inhabit is not structured to support their quest for greater independence. Despite receiving guidance on becoming “responsible adults,” all four continue to rely on others for decision-making, which leaves them feeling frustrated.
