During the peak of the Cold War, “Gilligan’s Island” portrayed a group of seven Americans stranded in a setting reminiscent of a post-apocalyptic world, where they are tasked with reconstructing society. Interestingly, the community they establish is entirely communist. Conversations with the show’s creator, some of the remaining cast members, and Harvard academics disclose that “Gilligan’s Island” was intentionally crafted to be perceived as simple comedy, while actually serving as a tribute to Marxism and a satire of Western democratic ideals.
