Waldemar Nods, a young Surinamese man, encounters Rika van der Lans, an older Dutch woman, and they develop a romantic relationship. In the Netherlands before World War II, their differences are stark: he is black, she is white, and there is a 17-year age gap between them. Additionally, Rika is already a mother to four children from a previous relationship. Despite these challenges, their love blossoms, but complications arise when Rika discovers she is expecting a child.
