Acclaimed documentary filmmaker D.A. Pennebaker captures the rise of Otis Redding as he performs at the iconic Monterey International Pop Festival in June 1967. Comedian Tom Smothers introduces Redding to an audience that is beginning to disperse, but Redding captivates them with his electrifying version of “Shake.” His set also features “Respect” (a song he penned), “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long,” “Satisfaction,” and “Try a Little Tenderness.” Sadly, Redding’s life was cut short in a plane crash six months later. Pennebaker, who began his career in the 1950s with experimental films, received an Oscar nomination for Best Documentary Feature in 1993 for “The War Room,” which offered an inside look at Bill Clinton’s 1992 campaign. His work has also explored figures like Norman Mailer, Bob Dylan, and David Bowie.
