“The Tribe” is a post-apocalyptic TV series from New Zealand and the UK, targeting a teenage audience. Set in a future where a lethal virus has eradicated all adults, the story revolves around children and teenagers who must survive on their own. The narrative unfolds in an unnamed city populated by various tribes of young people. The series was primarily shot in and around Wellington, New Zealand.
Created by Raymond Thompson and Harry Duffin, the show was developed and produced by the Cloud 9 Screen Entertainment Group in collaboration with the UK’s Channel 5. It has been broadcast on more than 40 networks worldwide.
The series premiered on Channel 5 on April 24, 1999, and quickly attracted a substantial following. Between 1999 and 2003, five seasons comprising 260 half-hour episodes were produced. Although a sixth season was planned for 2003, Channel 5’s Nick Wilson and Raymond Thompson decided to cancel the show. They believed that despite its continued success, the cast was aging, and the premise of children surviving without adults was becoming less plausible. Consequently, the final two episodes were aired on September 6, 2003.
