The Penguins of Madagascar is a CGI animated TV show from the United States, broadcast on Nickelodeon. It features nine characters from the DreamWorks Animation film Madagascar: the penguins named Skipper, Kowalski, Private, and Rico; the lemurs King Julien, Maurice, and Mort; along with the chimpanzees Mason and Phil. New additions to the series include Marlene the otter and a zookeeper called Alice. This show marks the first collaboration between Nicktoons and DreamWorks Animation.
The pilot episode, titled “Gone in a Flash,” was shown during the “Superstuffed Nicktoons Weekend” on November 29, 2008. The Penguins of Madagascar then became a regular series starting March 28, 2009. Its debut episode attracted 6.1 million viewers, setting a new record for the most-watched premiere.
While the series occasionally references the broader franchise, it doesn’t fit into a specific timeline within it. McGrath, who co-created the film’s characters, mentioned that the series is set “not specifically before or after the movie, I just wanted them all back at the zoo. I think of it as taking place in a parallel universe.”
