Set in the heart of New York City in the year 1900, ‘The Knick’ revolves around the Knickerbocker Hospital and its pioneering team of surgeons, nurses, and staff who are advancing medical practices during a period marked by extremely high mortality rates and the absence of antibiotics.
At the forefront is John Thackery, a gifted surgeon who is innovating new techniques in medicine, all while secretly battling a cocaine addiction. He leads a group of doctors that includes his mentee, Dr. Everett Gallinger; the young Dr. Bertie Chickering Jr.; and Dr. Algernon Edwards, a talented surgeon who has recently joined the team. The vibrant ensemble at the hospital also features Cornelia Robertson, the daughter of the hospital’s patron, Captain August Robertson; the gruff ambulance driver Tom Cleary; Lucy Elkins, a naive nurse from the countryside; the corrupt hospital administrator Herman Barrow; and Sister Harriet, a nun known for her outspoken nature.
