“The Boondocks” is an American animated series for adults that airs on Cartoon Network’s late-night segment, Adult Swim. Debuting on November 6, 2005, the show was created by Aaron McGruder and is adapted from his comic strip of the same name. The narrative follows the Freemans, an African-American family that relocates from Chicago’s South Side to the fictional, tranquil, and predominantly white suburb of Woodcrest. The series draws much of its humor and tension from the interplay of different cultures, lifestyles, social classes, stereotypes, and races.
Across its first three seasons, the show has produced 45 episodes. The two-part finale of the second season, “The Hunger Strike” and “The Uncle Ruckus Reality Show,” was not broadcast on American television due to Adult Swim’s concerns about potential legal issues with BET. However, these episodes were shown on Teletoon and made available on DVD in the U.S. Additionally, the third season episodes “Pause” and “The Story of Jimmy Rebel” were removed from regular rotation after their initial airing and are no longer included in reruns. A fourth season, consisting of twenty episodes, was announced to premiere in January 2014.
