In the year 2138, the virtual reality gaming industry is thriving. One day, a well-loved online game called Yggdrasil is discreetly discontinued. Yet, a player by the name of Momonga chooses to remain logged in. As a result, he is transformed into a skeletal figure, embodying “the most powerful wizard.” The game world evolves, with non-player characters (NPCs) starting to experience emotions. Lacking family, friends, or a societal role, the otherwise unremarkable young man, Momonga, sets out to dominate the new world that the game has turned into.
