The Diclonius, a mutated form of human believed to be chosen by a divine force and destined to bring about humanity’s downfall, are characterized by two horns on their heads and a “sixth sense” that grants them telekinetic powers. Because of these dangerous abilities, they have been captured and kept in isolation by the government. Lucy, a young and unstable Diclonius, manages to escape her captivity, violently killing most of the laboratory guards, but is shot in the head during her getaway. She survives and ends up on a beach, where she is found by two teenagers, Kouta and Yuka. With her memories erased, she is named “Nyuu,” the only word she can utter, and the pair take her in to live at Kouta’s house.
