Israel “Reefa” Hernandez Jr, a gifted 18-year-old artist and Colombian immigrant, is enjoying his final summer in Miami with his friends, family, and new girlfriend Frankie before heading to New York City on an art scholarship. As Israel and his friends skateboard through the city and adorn the walls of Wynwood, Miami’s graffiti hub, with their art, they face growing concerns: Israel and his family are anxiously waiting for their Green Cards, and he is eager to gain recognition for his artistic talent. On August 6, 2013, while Israel is spray painting a wall that would earn him instant respect from his peers, a tragic encounter with a police officer leaves his family and friends heartbroken, the Miami community in uproar, and the nation grappling with yet another incident of police violence.
