Plauto, the clown, narrates the tale of the Circo de las Alegrías. The circus is owned by Doña Alegría, who insists that her son, Palevhi, uphold the traditional style of their performances, despite the pressing need for a major overhaul. In recent years, the circus has been struggling, teetering on the brink of financial ruin, leaving its employees in a state of despair. One September evening, Palevhi announces to the circus family that they will be closing for good. The initial tears of frustration soon turn into a quest for answers and solutions.
