In this unique deadpan comedy, “The Passion” follows the journey of Frances-ko (played by Mayuko Iwasa), a young woman brought up in a convent and named after Saint Francesco. Troubled by her lack of understanding about love and sexuality, she seeks a divine sign but instead encounters a voice from an unexpected source. A peculiar growth with a human face emerges between her legs, incessantly criticizing her with phrases like “Woman, you are worthless!” She names this entity Mr. Koga, and despite its relentless verbal attacks, Frances-ko learns to cope, developing a contentious yet mutually dependent relationship with it. This unusual film, adapted from Kaoruko Himeno’s celebrated 1997 novel, is expertly directed by Ryoko Yoshida and beautifully shot by seasoned cinematographer Akiko Ashizawa. Mayuko Iwasa delivers a captivating performance, while Kanji Furutachi adds humor by voicing the misogynistic Koga. The film’s eclectic soundtrack, composed by the legendary experimental musician Otomo Yoshihide, is a standout feature.
