Set on the island of Kinmen, known for its precarious position as a military base due to its proximity to China, “Paradise in Service” chronicles the journey of a young man fulfilling his military duty in Unit 831 from 1969 to 1972, amidst the looming threat of war. Pao, a young man in his twenties from Southern Taiwan, is compelled by an unfortunate lottery draw to serve in the isolated and hazardous Kinmen. He is placed in the Sea Dragon (ARB), a unit infamous for its grueling physical demands. Yet, Pao soon discovers that his most formidable challenge is not the rigorous training of the Sea Dragon, but rather his unexpected assignment to Unit 831. In this unique role, Pao is determined to maintain his virginity, despite the obstacles he faces.
