Kate Graham thought her marriage was ideal, but her husband, Duke Fairbanks, who had been unfaithful with her friend Diana Coles, suddenly asks for a divorce after months of neglecting her. She decides to forgo the nearly one million dollars stipulated in their prenuptial agreement, allowing her to temporarily keep the house while Duke moves onto his yacht. Shortly thereafter, Duke’s body is discovered on the yacht. A mysterious man contacts Kate, claiming he killed Duke “for her” and demands 10% of Duke’s substantial estate. When her close friend, who is gay, is arrested without the possibility of bail, Kate enlists her lawyer to defend him. The killer insists on meeting her for dinner, evades Seattle PD detective Paul Tannon, demonstrates his knowledge of her preferences, reveals how he framed her friend Jim, and increases his demand to 20% now that she has two lives to cover. The mysterious killer turns out to be a tax official named Mathis.
