In 1970s Australia, Grace faces a series of unfortunate events and bereavements. Following the death of their mother during childbirth, she and her twin brother, Gilbert, are brought up by their father, Percy, a former juggler who struggles with alcoholism and paraplegia. Although their lives are marked by affection, another tragedy unfolds when Percy dies unexpectedly in his sleep. This leads to the siblings being forcibly split up and placed in different households.
