Michael Turner makes an unexpected return from the Iraq war to his small hometown, where he is welcomed by a relieved family—and a horde of the undead. When his younger brother accidentally unleashes a flesh-eating creature, the young soldier must quickly act to save him and reunite with his scattered family, including an estranged girlfriend and her new partner. As they gather, Michael takes on the responsibility of protecting the survivors through a gruesome night. They find temporary refuge in a local high school, hoping for safety, but this only forces Michael to confront the haunting memories of his past mistakes. Battling his own inner demons, Michael entrusts a local science professor with finding a solution to the terrifying invasion, praying his family doesn’t suffer the consequences. Yet, he realizes he has no choice but to embark on a solitary journey down the dreaded path that everyone fears.
