The film “Liefling” perfectly encapsulates its essence. This musical romance unfolds through timeless Afrikaans songs, spanning from the 1970s to contemporary hits. At its heart is Liefling Marais, a spirited young woman with a zest for life and a love for adventure. She resides on a farm with her father Simon, a university professor, her mother Linda, her grandfather Karel, her brother Kobus, and their housekeeper Katy. Simon’s university class introduces us to three friends: Jan, Pieter, and Gert, who also live in Hartbeespoort. Jan shares a home with his grandmother, Elsa Ferreira. The narrative kicks off during the December holidays, when Melanie von Staden, a pampered heiress, sets her sights on winning over the charming Jan Ferreira, who is, in turn, captivated by Liefling. Destiny weaves together lovers, friends, and supposed adversaries in a tale brimming with emotion, music, and dance.
