Alfonso, an elderly farmer, comes back to his home to care for his seriously ill son. Upon his return, he finds himself in his former house, where his ex-wife continues to reside along with his daughter-in-law and grandson. The environment he encounters is desolate, with expansive sugar cane fields enveloping the house and constantly emitting clouds of ash. Seventeen years after leaving them behind, Alfonso attempts to reintegrate into the family and rescue them from their plight.
