A young inmate becomes infatuated with a singer set to star in an upcoming musical, for which the director is currently holding auditions. He manages to escape and, through a series of intricate and often hilarious events, finds himself cast as the lead in the musical. However, just a day before the premiere, the police catch up with him… but that’s where I’ll stop to avoid giving too much away! The film is filled with sharp dialogue, fantastic music and singing, and a plot full of unexpected twists. The clever parallels between the play’s script and the unfolding real-life events make this one of the most delightful Czech films I’ve seen in years—and I’ve seen quite a few! It’s a must-watch for fans of comedy, drama, musicals, and theater.
