In 1971, post-civil rights San Francisco appeared to be an ideal setting for a Black veteran of the Korean War and his family to pursue their aspiration of financial freedom and his personal ambition to become his own “boss.” However, Charlie Walker soon discovered the harsh reality of his naivety. In a city teeming with pretenders and skeptics, he was determined not to accept “No” as an answer. It wasn’t until a devastating disaster created an unprecedented opportunity for a Black man that his fortunes began to change. This narrative explores the events that unfolded when he boldly seized that opportunity.
