Tatsuya Ichihashi is responsible for the murder of a British woman who was teaching English in Japan. After the crime, he manages to evade a police manhunt and makes his way to Aomori, which is 550 kilometers away. Realizing that he is a wanted man, he mutilates his lips in an attempt to alter his appearance. Haunted by remorse, he continues to elude law enforcement. He journeys 1,000 kilometers to Shikoku, hoping that by joining a pilgrimage, he might somehow bring his victim back to life. Unsurprisingly, this attempt fails, and he remains on the run. In an effort to escape his overwhelming guilt, he assumes a new identity and undergoes cosmetic surgery to further change his looks. He takes up work at construction sites, but when his coworkers grow suspicious, he flees to a remote island in Okinawa, where he relies on his survival skills to get by.
