The remarkable and previously unshared tale of an NYPD bomb disposal specialist’s significant contribution to easing the long-standing “Troubles” in Northern Ireland is now being told. In 1975, Denis Mulcahy, an Irish immigrant and member of the NYPD bomb squad, rallied his family, friends, and neighbors to create a program that offered Northern Irish children a temporary escape from their violent daily lives. Starting from humble beginnings, Project Children eventually facilitated summer-long visits for over 20,000 Catholic and Protestant children to suburban areas in the United States. During these visits, the children formed surprising friendships and discovered they had more in common with their so-called adversaries than they had realized. This incredible story is now being brought to life in a new documentary by Des Henderson, narrated by Liam Neeson, titled “How To Defuse A Bomb: The Project Children Story.”
