Hibiscus (played by Suivai Pilisipi Autagavaia, known for her role in the short film Manurewa) and the assertive Ruth (portrayed by Anna-Maree Thomas) have maintained their friendship since their school days. As Hibiscus approaches her last year at university, her overbearing mother insists that she avoid any romantic entanglements.
