In 1944, Dean Barry, a 23-year-old American sailor, finds himself in Naples, a city ravaged by bombings following Italy’s liberation. During his time there, he encounters Lucia, a destitute young woman, and quickly becomes deeply infatuated with her. Fast forward two years, as Dean’s military service concludes, he is compelled to head back to New Jersey, leaving Lucia behind in Naples, alone and expecting a child.
