In the summer of 1939, Zosia, a young Polish woman, is passionately in love with a Ukrainian man named Petro. However, their profound romance faces a challenge when Zosia’s father arranges her marriage to Skiba, a rich widower. Shortly after their wedding, Skiba is called to serve in the Polish army as war with Germany looms, leaving Zosia by herself. At the same time, the coexistence of Jews, Poles, and Ukrainians becomes increasingly strained.
