Vittorio Zemeli, a man nearing 60, resides in an apartment within a drab building located in a monotonous European city center, bisected by a river. He leads a solitary existence, with the television perpetually on to keep him company. One evening, as he often does, Vittorio is eating while watching TV and notices an actor who looks exactly like him. On screen, this doppelgänger takes his own life. The following day, Vittorio feels uneasy as he heads to work. Unexpectedly, three friends whisk him away to a well-known local restaurant to celebrate a birthday. However, the journey back home that night will be etched in his memory forever.
