Six young African American men from Akron, Ohio, embark on their college journey with the aim of challenging societal stereotypes and low expectations. Despite their self-assurance, they face a harsh reality when they leave home, encountering various personal crises. Equipped with skills in critical and metaphorical thinking, and possessing a rare ability to express their inner thoughts, each protagonist reveals his essence to us. Since the sixth grade, they have participated in an innovative mentoring program called ‘Alchemy, Inc.,’ which incorporates mythological storytelling, drumming, and writing. During biannual reunion workshops, they candidly share their struggles and successes with sincerity, intelligence, and heartfelt honesty. As they navigate racial challenges and seek support from new friends, distant fathers, and wise grandmothers, the six young men evolve before our eyes, displaying moments of quiet reflection, deep thought, and exuberance.
