Exiled from his native country, protest singer Klaus Drittemann is forced to leave East Berlin, along with his wife and child, to relocate to West Berlin. There, representatives from an American record label are eagerly anticipating his arrival, intending to capitalize on his escape from communism for both ideological and financial gain. However, Klaus, feeling as out of place in the West as he did in the East, is hesitant to be treated as a mere pawn. He avoids committing to a contract and instead travels to Cambridge to reunite with his father, a musician who also fled East Berlin thirty years ago when Klaus was just a child. Accompanying him is Emma, a young French journalist who knows the whereabouts of his father, who had been missing for over a decade. Although helpful, Emma may be withholding information from him.
