Len, a celebrated Surf Lifesaving champion and a revered figure in his surf club, much like his father before him, finds his status threatened by the arrival of Phil, a younger and more agile competitor. Len’s perception of Phil shifts dramatically when he discovers Phil is gay after seeing him with another man. Following the club’s annual awards dinner, Len confronts Phil in the locker room and assaults him. Surprisingly, Phil chooses not to report Len for the attack. Phil’s victory in the annual Surf Lifesaving competition marks Len’s ultimate defeat. In retaliation, Len gets Phil intoxicated and subjects him to degrading treatment. However, this malicious behavior forces Len to confront a profound question about his own sexual identity.
