Anna’s tale unfolds on Åland Island in 1666, during the onset of the most extensive and organized witch-hunts in Scandinavian history. A total of 16 women were accused of collaborating with the devil, leading to the execution of seven. Judge Psilander, well-versed in the latest witchcraft theories of the era, views the trials as a means to rid the island of superstition and promote reason and science. The protagonist, Anna, who is both clever and headstrong, gains a close perspective on these events as she begins her job as a maid in the judge’s household. Unfortunately for Anna, she becomes deeply enamored with Elias, the husband of her friend Rakel, but his interest in her quickly wanes. Feeling hurt and envious, Anna seeks vengeance by falsely accusing Rakel to Judge Psilander. It is only after Rakel’s arrest and the ensuing chaos that Anna comprehends the seriousness of her actions.
