In late 1942, on the Eastern Front in Ukraine, Private Lombos (played by Gábor Makray), a devoted soldier yearning to reunite with his young wife, finds himself stationed far from home. An administrative blunder causes him to miss the train that could have taken him back. Just when he believes things can’t deteriorate further, his true ordeal begins. A well-educated young teacher, fluent in three languages, Lombos dutifully takes up arms once more and advances on the Eastern Front. During an assault, he is injured and spends a harrowing night in a trench behind enemy lines. It is here that he encounters a mysterious elderly man (portrayed by Tamás Varga), whose words profoundly challenge Lombos’s steadfast belief in his military comrades and homeland. At dawn, Russian troops discover them, leading to Lombos’s capture and subsequent entanglement with the “tramplers.” The enigmatic old man reappears among the enemy, moving stealthily and offering guidance to ensure the young soldier’s survival at any cost.
