Inspired by the real-life experiences of poet Jimmy Santiago Baca, this film centers on the lives of half-brothers Paco and Cruz, along with their mixed-race cousin Miklo. Set in 1972, the narrative begins with the trio as part of an East L.A. gang called “Vatos Locos.” The plot delves into how a violent crime and the lure of drugs transform their destinies. Miklo ends up in San Quentin prison, where he establishes a new life. Cruz, despite his talent as an artist, falls victim to a devastating heroin addiction. Meanwhile, Paco pursues a career in law enforcement, positioning himself as an adversary to his “carnal,” Miklo.
