Dr. Lila Colleti, a psychiatrist specializing in the criminally insane at a local prison, is going through a divorce and is heartbroken when her husband is awarded custody of their two young daughters. This decision is largely due to the risky nature of Lila’s job, which involves unpredictable and long hours. After one of her patients, Ed Baikman, is released to a halfway house, he becomes delusional and decides to “assist” Lila by killing her ex-husband and his new partner. When Lila rejects his romantic advances, Baikman threatens to accuse her of being an accomplice in the murders. Although Lila’s boyfriend, Detective Macy Kobacek, remains supportive, Baikman’s cunning manipulation casts enough doubt that even Macy starts questioning Lila’s innocence.
