During the era known as the Stolen Generations, countless Aboriginal girls were forcibly removed from their families and coerced into domestic labor by the Australian Government. Ostensibly hired as servants, these girls were subjected to strict control over their movements, earnings, and living conditions, often leading to a relentless cycle of mistreatment, sexual assault, and enslavement. The repercussions of these actions are still profoundly felt today. “Servant or Slave” shares the personal accounts of five such women—Rita, Violet, and the Wenberg sisters—offering a powerful narrative of this overlooked and somber chapter in Australian history. Directed with skill and empathy by documentarian Steven McGregor (known for “Croker Island Exodus,” MIFF 2012), this film is a poignant and urgent exploration of the human suffering within Australia’s Indigenous past, conveyed through the raw and honest voices of those who endured it.
