Emmett Murphy, portrayed by Shane Hagedorn, is a veteran of the Civil War who returns to his home in Michigan in search of tranquility. Following the death of his wife, he honors a promise made to a dying soldier by bringing the soldier’s African American widow, Haddie, played by Lauren LaStrada, and her daughter to live with him and his son. The local community is not prepared to accept this unconventional family, and a sinister scheme is devised to drive them away. Confronted with prejudice and heavily outnumbered, Emmett grapples with maintaining his faith. However, when a circus train arrives in town, a series of mysterious events unfold, offering Emmett and his family the unexpected assistance they need to prevail.
