“To A More Perfect Union: U.S. v Windsor” narrates the inspiring story of unexpected champions, Edie Windsor, an octogenarian, and her lawyer, Roberta Kaplan, as they pursue justice. After Edie’s partner passed away, she faced a hefty estate tax bill because the federal government did not recognize same-sex marriages, denying them federal benefits. Outraged by the lack of acknowledgment for her over forty-year relationship with her female partner, Edie decided to take legal action against the U.S. government—and emerged victorious. The film presents Windsor and Kaplan’s legal and personal journeys through their own accounts, as well as interviews with other legal team members, activists, legal experts, and notable supporters and critics. Beyond highlighting this landmark case in the marriage equality movement, the documentary explores our collective journey as a society, culture, and citizens striving for equal rights.
