At the age of 20, Burton Barr Jr. was forcibly injected with heroin by a group of friends, marking the beginning of a 22-year struggle with drug addiction. During the peak of his dependency and in his most desperate moments, his father approached him. Instead of lecturing Barr about the need to quit or discussing the pain he was inflicting on his family, or even the harm he was doing to himself, his father simply handed him a Bible. He instructed Barr to read a specific passage, Psalms 121, every morning before leaving the house. This scripture became the key to how Burton Barr Jr. eventually conquered his addictions to heroin, cocaine, crack, alcohol, cigarettes, and sex, by embracing and living according to the teachings of the 121st Psalm.
