Dee, a middle-aged wife and mother, finds herself trapped in a monotonous job and an unfulfilling marriage in International Falls, Minnesota. A lover of comedy with a hidden aspiration to perform, her only solace comes from watching unknown comedians who perform at the hotel where she works. This weekend, Tim, a jaded headliner acutely aware of his minor status, arrives. When Dee decides to visit Tim’s room, her defenses start to crumble, forcing her to confront the harsh truths she’s been avoiding: a husband who has been unfaithful for years and a dream she’s never had the courage to chase. Their encounter extends into the following day, with both recognizing they’re seeking temporary solace in each other. Tim reveals he’s in the midst of a divorce, has lost custody of his son, and that the night’s performance will be his final act as a comedian. As the line between humor and sorrow blurs, Dee is compelled to confront the universal question: What comes next?
