Despite the danger looming over him, Stéphane chooses to return to Corsica for the funeral of Christophe, a childhood friend and fellow soldier who was killed the previous day. This event triggers memories of the series of incidents that transformed him from a well-educated middle-class individual from Bastia into a delinquent, then a political radical, and eventually forced him into hiding.
