Aspiring actor Wayne Wenders (played by Eric Mabius) is humorously recognized for his role in a low-budget commercial promoting medication for Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Eager to shed this image, he secures a lead role in a national root beer advertisement. However, when his payment is delayed, Wayne seeks alternative ways to cover his overdue rent and ends up applying for a position teaching Shakespeare at the local high school. Principal Brenda Post (portrayed by Stefanie Powers) hires him due to his innate theatrical skills and enthusiasm. Wayne soon discovers a surprising passion for teaching, as well as a budding romance with fellow English teacher Amy (Virginia Williams), who is quickly captivated by his fervor and innovative idea to engage students through a dynamic film project. As Wayne grows into his teaching role and his relationship with Amy deepens, he faces a crucial decision about whether pursuing his dreams of fame is worth the potential sacrifices.
