The destiny of Tokugawa’s realm is at stake as Yagyu Jubei embarks on a quest to uncover the fate of ten shogun spies who vanished without a trace. Matsukata Hiroki, a veteran from the Golden Age of Japanese Cinema, demonstrates his enduring talent by portraying an older, wiser Yagyu Jubei in a film that masterfully updates the samurai genre for the 21st century. Called out of semi-retirement by Shogun Iemitsu, Jubei is tasked with investigating a clan suspected of manufacturing explosives for an uprising. Accompanied by a skilled female ninja, they venture into the Shirakawa domain, where their combat abilities are repeatedly challenged as they work to dismantle a plot that threatens to usher in a new era of conflict. In the 1960s, Yagyu Jubei was famously portrayed by Konoe Jushiro, Matsukata Hiroki’s father, bringing the character’s legacy full circle.
