An adult reflects on his childhood experiences in Australia during the final year of World War II, living with his mother and two sisters. With his father away fighting against the Japanese, the family receives assistance from two Italian prisoners of war on their estate. Eventually, two German refugee women also join them. The challenges of rural life and personal conflicts reach a climax.
