This film offers a compassionate portrayal inspired by the bond between tobacco heiress Doris Duke and her reserved butler, Bernard Lafferty. Known for her unpredictable nature, Duke dismisses her previous butler over a chilled cantaloupe, leading to Lafferty’s arrival. Having previously worked for Liz Taylor and Peggy Lee, Lafferty is a recovering alcoholic just out of rehab. Over time, he becomes Duke’s gay confidant as she navigates life with youthful lovers, makes quick, astute decisions, and oversees her wealth and orchid collection, while Lafferty takes care of her New Jersey estate. Despite having access to an enviable wine cellar, Bernard relapses. Will he be able to regain control when Doris relies on him the most?
